A Bremen-area man was handling a firearm on Wednesday night died from wounds sustained after an accidental shooting, according to information from the Haralson County Sheriffs’ Office.

The HCSO reported that Elijah Brackett, 19, from Bremen, died from an abdominal wound sustained when he shot himself on Wednesday night, April 12.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene in reference to a shooting, and Dep. Seth Entrekin and Sgt. Jarrett Chandler found Brackett with the self-inflicted wound.

Soon after, EMS arrived on scene and began working on Brackett’s injury.

Brackett was airlifted to Kennestone Hospital for further treatment, but died of the wound.

Lt. Jason Bowman conducted an investigation on-scene while Brackett was transported and was able to determine through witnesses that the Brackett sustained his injuries on accident.

“Unfortunately, we have seen multiple accidental shooting in the last two years,” states Sheriff Stacy Williams. “This Office fully supports the Second Amendment right to have a firearm, but with that right comes responsibility. Please, if you are going to own a firearm, learn about firearm safety. I hope you will join me in praying for this family during this difficult time of devastating loss.”

Additional information may follow from the HCSO. Check back for more as the story develops.
