Fatality reported in blaze at commercial building fueled by woods fire

One person is dead and the State Fire Marshal’s Office is joining local officials in investigating the cause of a wood fire that spread to a commercial building, according to a release this afternoon from the Haralson County Fire Department.

The HCFD reported that they responded to the blaze called in at 6:32 p.m. on Thursday, March 26 after the fire in the woods spread due to wind to the building. The department responded to the Coppermine area of Haralson County near the Polk and Paulding county lines.

When they arrived on scene, the release stated that crews found the commercial building fully involved and undertook an “aggressive fire suppression operation” but unfortunately were unable to save the individual inside, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

No information was provided in the release about the person who died.

The HCFD, Haralson County Sheriff’s Office are working on the investigation into Thursday’s fatality with the help of the State Fire Marshal’s Office and Georgia Forestry Commission.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of those affected by this tragic incident,” HCFD officials added in the release. “Our personnel responded quickly and worked diligently under very difficult circumstances.”

The department added their thanks to Bremen Fire-Rescue, Polk County Fire-Rescue, Paulding County Fire-Rescue and local and state law enforcement and officials for their help in the operation on Thursday, alongside Ambucare EMS and the Haralson County Coroner’s Office.
