UPDATE: Overnight shooting leaves two injured

A shooting just after midnight saw two injured and a suspect taken into custody by the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a release from the HCSO, Deputies were dispatched to Eaves Bridge Road and Garner Road in the Buchanan area of northern Haralson County after 911 was called to investigate a call involving a shooting.

Per the release, once deputies arrived on the scene they found two men who were injured: Austin Glover and Cameron Callahan. Glover had been shot in the neck, and Callahan suffered from a head injury.

Both are still in critical condition at an area hospital.

Callahan was able to speak long enough to determine that the two had been riding around on dirt roads in a truck in the Eaves Bridge Road area and a man began chasing them on an ATV and fired a shot at them.

Glover and Callahan hid in the woods at first, but then when they attempted to leave the area they found the ATV driver on a side road and fired at the pair again, and struck the driver and caused them to hit a tree.

While authorities were investigating, a deputy spotted the ATV parked not far away on a side road, and when they approached they found Omar Braderick Bennett, 41, of a Buchanan-area address, who surrendered without further incident.

Law enforcement also recovered the firearm used in the shooting, the release noted.

During the investigation at the scene, a deputy a short distance away observed an ATV parked down a small side road. Deputies approached the ATV and found the suspect, Omar Braderick Bennett, who surrendered to deputies without incident. They were able to recover the firearm used in the shooting.

Bennett was interviewed by officials and he admitted that he shot at Glover and Callahan in the truck, but only because it was “tearing up the roads and he also thought it was a friend’s stolen vehicle.”

“Bennett claimed that after he shot at them the first time and they ran into the woods, he took a photograph of the vehicle to verify it was the suspected stolen vehicle, and he said he was told yes,” the release stated.

He claimed he blocked the road so they couldn’t leave, and claimed he only shot in the air and not at the vehicle during the incident. Law enforcement did verify the truck was Glover’s property.

“You cannot take the law into your own hands,” states Sheriff Stacy Williams. “What makes this case even worse, is that the offender waited on these boys, fired his weapon from the roadway and then left those boys there and did not even call 911 at that point to help them. If you believe that a crime is being committed, just call 911 and let us handle it. A possible stolen truck or someone being upset should never cost another person their life. Please pray for the recovery of these two young men and their families.”

Bennett is facing multiple charges that include Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery and more. As this case is still a very active investigation, the full list of charges is not yet ready.

A shooting overnight in the northern portion of Haralson County saw one person injured, according to the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Stacy Williams confirmed the shooting incident overnight and that one person was injured and airlifted to an area hospital for treatment.

A person of interest is in custody at this time. No additional threats to the community are expected following the overnight incident.

Investigative efforts are underway, and Williams said further information would be released when available to do so.
