HCSO: Big bust in traffic stop on I-20 yields nearly $400k in meth

Bond had still not been set for a California man busted with 44 pounds of methamphetamine in Haralson County during a traffic stop on Interstate 20 on Monday, according to a posting from the Sheriff’s Office.

Per their reporting, Johnathan De Jesus Monzon-Valdivia, 21, of a Riverbank, California address, was taken into custody were he remains without any bond set on felony and misdemeanor charges.

He was stopped on Monday by the HCSO’s Crime Suppression Unit for failing to maintain lane and changing lanes without signaling while behind the wheel of a 2013 Honda Civic. During the stop, Monzon-Valdivia allowed deputies to search. They also learned that he was driving without a license.

They found a “large quantity of methamphetamine” totaling 44 pounds (or 20 kilos) with a street value of nearly $400,000. A much smaller quantity of “black tar heroin” was also seized.

Monzon-Valdivia remains in custody as of this posting at the Haralson County Jail on felony charges of trafficking in cocaine, illegal drugs, marijuana or methamphetamine, and misdemeanor charges of failure to maintain lane, failure to signal when turning or changing lanes and driving while unlicensed.

Haralson County Sheriffs Stacy Williams said he was proud of the work his deputies are doing to get drugs off local roadways in a statement this evening to Polk Today.

“I am proud of our crime Surpression team and drug task force. They work hard to keep the citizens of Haralson County safe by conducting special operations to go after the drugs and drug dealers bringing this poison into this County. In the last two and half to three months, we have taken over 150lbs of meth and cocaine off the roads of Haralson County that was meant to poison our families. We will continue to protect our citizens and their families and go after drug dealers.”

Here’s the original posting from the HCSO:

On Monday, August 28, 2023, Deputies with the Haralson County Crime Suppression Unit (CSU) working interdiction on I-20 observed a 2013 white Honda Civic failing to maintain its lane. CSU got behind the vehicle and the vehicle changed lanes without using a turn signal, so a traffic stop was initiated. During the traffic stop, the driver gave consent for a search and during that search, a large quantity of methamphetamine was located. The driver was arrested, and the vehicle was brought to the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office for processing. The traffic stop yielded 20 kilos (44 pounds) of methamphetamine and 16 grams of black tar heroin that was to be distributed in the West Georgia area. The estimated street value of these drugs is around $395,000.

Johnathan De Jesus Monzon Valdivia, a 21-year-old H/M out of Riverbank, California, was arrested and charged with Failure to Maintain Lane, Failure to use Turn Signal, Driving While Unlicensed, Violation of Georgia Controlled Substance Act (VGCSA) Trafficking Methamphetamine and VGCSA Trafficking Heroin.

The drugs and the case have been turned over to the Northwest Georgia Drug Task Force (formerly the Haralson Paulding DTF) so no additional information can be released.
