A Tallapoosa man is in jail on serious charges after the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office’s Crime Suppression Unit attempted to take him into custody and had to dodge his attempt to run over deputies before he took off and was ultimately stopped on Old Highway 100 during a chase.
The HCSO reported in a release on Monday that Sparky Chad Marcus, 29, of a Tallapoosa address, was charged with driving while license suspended, fleeing or attempting to elude, reckless driving and other traffic-related offenses after he was booked into the Haralson County Jail.
The Sheriff’s Office also had warrants for his arrest for aggravated assault on a Peace Officer, Felony fleeing and attempting to elude and obstruction. Marcus is also wanted in another jurisdiction and had a felony probation violation warrant out against him prior to the incident.
Marcus was being sought by the Crime Suppression Unit on Monday and learned he was behind the wheel of a U-Haul van when they sought him out at his home on Providence Church Spur in the Tallapoosa area. During their attempt to locate their suspect, Marcus drove up in his U-Haul van. When deputies went to approach him, Marcus “turned around in the van almost striking two deputies before fleeing.”
He then took officers on a chase that ended on Old Highway 100 where the HCSO report he was “excessively speeding” and driving on the wrong side of the roadway and even through several yards.
Deputies stopped Marcus with a PIT maneuver and it crashed into a ditch. HCSO deputies deployed K-9 Janco during the incident as Marcus “began to struggle during the arrest.”
“This individual had no regard for the lives of the deputies or any citizen that was in his path today,” states Sheriff Stacy Williams. “He will face the appropriate charges for his actions as well as answer for his outstanding felony warrant. I would like to say that I appreciate the effort of our Crime Suppression Unit today in taking this dangerous felon off the streets.”
Marcus remained in the Haralson County Jail without bond set as of this posting.
