A Haralson County Sheriff’s Office arrest on Wednesday saw the seizure of drugs and guns during a traffic stop, according to a release from the HCSO on their Facebook page over the weekend.
Sheriff Stacy Williams in the release praised the actions of Sgt. Trenton Benson from the HCSO Crime Suppression Unit for stopping an aggressive driver on Interstate 20 in Haralson County and stopped the vehicle as it tailgated a traffic trailer, abruptly passed and then zigzagged in the lanes.
Sgt. Benson during the stop was met with obstructive behavior by Bryan Shaque Steele of a Greenville, Alabama, address, and he was ultimately pulled from the vehicle. Police searched Steele and found a set of scales, and said there might be more inside the car.
Other officers arrived, a search of the car began and HCSO personnel found two handguns including one stolen from Louisiana. After he was taken onward to jail, a search of the patrol vehicle’s backseat after he was pulled out turned up a purple bag with seven individual bags of MDMA (aka ecstasy) that totals 232 grams (8.5 ounces) found inside.
“Sgt Benson made a simple traffic stop and through his training, knowledge and experience, recognized the signs that a possible crime was being committed in his presence,” Sheriff Williams said in the release. “He conducted an investigation, and another drug dealer was taken off the roads of Haralson County. I commend Sgt. Benson for his thoroughness in this action and for making our community and the communities these drugs were headed for, safer.”
He remained in the Haralson County Detention Center on felony and misdemeanor charges with bond denied.
Those included felonies for two counts of possession of firearm or knife during the commission of or attempt to commit certain felonies, criminal use of an article with altered ID mark (other than motor vehicle,) theft by receiving stolen property, and trafficking in ecstasy. Misdemeanor charges were obstruction of law enforcement officers, following too closely, failure to maintain lane, an open container violation and seatbelt violation.
