Public Service Commission primaries coming up on June 17

Haralson County voters are being asked to help decide who will be on the ballot come November for a redo in the Public Service Commission race from 2022.

The Democratic and Republican parties are putting up candidates for a special primary vote coming up on June 17, with early voting beginning on May 27 and running through June 13.

The Public Service Commission seat is a statewide primary race for the District 2 and District 3 seats and polling places across the county will be open on June 17 to determine who will be heading toward the November ballot for a redo some three years later.

The deadline to register to vote in the election is May 19, and early voting will run at the Haralson County Courthouse in Buchanan starting on May 27 and continue through June 13. The courthouse is located at 4485 Georgia Hwy. 120, Buchanan.

Early voting is being held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The drop box for absentee ballots is also located at the Haralson County Courthouse, and can be used during the same schedule.

Contact the Board of Elections and Registration at 770-646-2010 to request an absentee ballot, check in on registration status or request assistance if needed to participate in the upcoming primary.

The balloting for this round of voting for the Public Service Commission is a primary vote, meaning that a Democratic and Republican ballot will be available for two of the PSC seats: District 2 and District 3.

The primaries include District 2 Democrat Alicia Johnson, and GOP candidates Tim Echols and Lee Muns.

District 3’s Democratic primary is a four-way contested race including Daniel Blackmon, Peter Hubbard, Robert Jones and Keisha Sean Waites.

The GOP is only putting forth Fitz Johnson for the District 3 primary.

Voters will decide on the primaries after the 2022 PSC vote was canceled after an August 5 ruling by the U.S. District Court that the procedures for the at-large races previously held violated the Voting Rights Act.

Now the races are back on the ballot, the November 4 election this year will be a statewide race.

If needed, a primary run-off will be held on July 15.
